Jakmel, We Love You!
Exploring the Streets of Jakmel Through the Lens of Young People Who Call It Home
In January 2014, Anne Kotleba traveled to Jakmel, Haiti with a team of colleagues from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Ken Krafchek, Paula Phillips, and Gracie Xavier. They taught art curricula to high school through adult-aged students who are enrolled at the Jakmel Ekspresyon Community Arts Center. The team’s fast-track courses in monotype printmaking and bookmaking, digital photography and stenciling, and beginning drawing and collage correlated with the Center’s mission to provide professional certification and expanded work potential for those enrolled.
Anne's course utilized digital photography as a tool for storytelling. Class participants, some of whom had never held a camera before, were introduced to techniques and concepts to share the beauty and the sometime less beautiful reality of life in Jakmel.
Below are some of the students' work.
